When Anytime Fitness opened its doors in Hereford, hundreds of members joined within weeks. We asked fitness manager and personal trainer Oisin Devitt to tell us more about the fitness club that never closes.

Firstly, how is Anytime Fitness different from other gyms?
We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so everyone can fit in a workout, whatever their schedule is. Our classes cater for every fitness level and include many styles of training.

What age group is finding the gym most attractive?
We have a diverse range of over 800 members, from 16 to 70 year olds. The average age is about 30.

The most popular class?
Spin, followed by yoga and Body Pump.

What sparked your own interest in fitness and what do you love about your job most?
I have always loved exercising, so it seemed like a natural progression to work in the health and fitness industry. I love helping first time gym goers find their confidence and passion for training. When you see them getting results and feeling great about themselves, it reminds me of the reason I have stayed in this industry.

In your experience of training clients, what’s the most important aspect in getting fit?
Consistency. When people decide what they want to achieve, they usually have a good idea about what they need to do, and get into a routine initially. It’s staying the course that proves to be the hardest for many.

Getting back on track after the excesses of Christmas can be hard. Any words of advice?
The hardest thing to do is taking that first step. I encourage people to come in for just 15 minutes of light exercise, it’s the best way to motivate them to get back to the gym. Once they get over the idea of having a terrible first session back and feeling sore for days, it becomes a lot easier. Exercising should never be a chore, it should always be fun, even cathartic.

How do you fit in your own training around your job and other commitments?
I train before or after work every day. If I am working late, I get up a bit earlier than normal and train before work, and if I am in early, then I train after work. Weekends are for my days off training, and for rest.
