While Manuka Honey is extremely well-known for its special properties, Honeydew Honey also offers some excellent health benefits. In essence, Manuka Honey is great for everything up to, and including the stomach, but Manuka cannot survive the journey through the stomach, so that’s where the Honeydew Honey comes in.
Honeydew Honey contains much higher levels of complex sugars called oligosaccharides compared to nectar (floral) honeys and also contains higher levels of antioxidants and minerals.
Research shows oligosaccharides are important for maintaining a healthy digestive system and work as a pre-biotic, which supports the growth of good bacteria in the gut. It has the unique ability to survive the journey, undigested by the stomach, and reach the intestine which has a population of about 100 trillion bacteria, some of which are beneficial and some potentially harmful.
Even with a healthy diet, the balance can easily be upset, for example by stress, antibiotics, over-indulgence, or the natural aging process. How well the digestive system functions depends on the balance between the two, and with the Honeydew Honey helping to increase the good bacteria, this can ease the symptoms of colitis, Crohn’s, IBS and other bowel diseases.
Pleasant to take, Honeydew Honey has a texture like golden syrup and is delicious with plain yoghurt, on toast, in drinks or on porridge each morning.
Did you know?
Only found in some parts of the South Island of New Zealand, this beautiful, dark, tangy flavoured honey comes from the Beech Tree which harbours a little insect inside their black rippled bark. This insect puts out a little white frond with a dew drop on the end which has a sweet taste and is popular with bees, wasps and birds. In earlier years beekeepers used this honey as feed for their bees, as it was not thought to be a true nectar. Its popularity started out in Germany about 10 years ago. Now, popular everywhere, it is sought after for its properties aiding digestion.
