Whether you’re serious about boxing or serious about getting into shape, we can help you achieve your goals. The same methods that build power, speed and stamina in the ring, have just as much to offer anyone wanting to get into the best shape of their life. At South Wye Police Boxing Academy you can learn to box with the expert guidance of experienced England Boxing coaches who are all fully qualified, first aid trained and DBS checked.
The national standard boxing gym is based at Hinton Community Centre. It has two full-size competition boxing rings, a purpose built strength and conditioning area designed by Olympic boxing coaches, and also a punch bag section and the club’s famous monkey bar challenge area.
In 2010 the club received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and in 2016 the Sport England Club Mark Award in recognition of the high standards of welfare, equity, coaching and management in community sport.
Richie Woodhall, former world super middleweight WBO Champion and GB Olympic coach said of the club:
“South Wye Police Boxing Academy is a very forward-thinking club. Having looked at the boxers, there is a lot of potential and talent, but what is more pleasing to see is that the boxers are being coached and looked after in the right way.”
We have had a very successful season with two of our senior boxers competing on our televised show at the beginning of the year, and Yusuf Abdallah becoming the West Midlands, Midlands and University welterweight champion.
In the coming season we hope to keep pushing the limits on what we can achieve as a club. Although the old traditions and training methods from 40 years ago are still used in some boxing clubs, this is not the case with our Olympic team and the boxers who are brave enough to step through those ropes.
Our competitive squad boxers follow the technical programmes put in place by our Olympic coaches, with Richie Woodhall visiting our club on programmed sessions to check on how the work is being completed. We also cooperate with external professional strength and conditioning coaches who help with increasing the power and fitness of our squad. Additionally, monthly fitness tests are carried out to check progression.
This summer the South Wye Police Boxing Academy will be hosting two summer camps with boxers from all over the country visiting the facility to train and learn from visiting national and GB coaches.
